This is part of a series inside the series of my 101 Coffee Dates.
When I realized that the woman I had been talking to through the dressing room wall this whole time was named Shirley and that the only dress in my dressing room haul that delighted me was the one with roses, I concluded that my grandma was with me in the shop that day.
It was suddenly an absolute yes to the dress! And it was also an absolutely yes to taking myself out for a glass of rosé before heading home. I knew just the spot and set out down the street for my favorite wine bar. Just as I was about to cross the street, a sign outside another restaurant caught my eye, advertising happy hour. And with an “oo la la”, I made a split-second decision to pop in there instead.
I found a perch at the bar that would be good for people-watching, set my bags down on the seat next to me, and immediately caught the attention of the man sitting on the other side of my bags. Banter ensued, and it wasn’t long before he leaned over my bags and said, “May I?” asking if he could have the seat my bags were on. And just like that, we were on what felt a lot like a date.
Not a coffee date (that would come), but a date nonetheless. We were talking about something, travel I suppose, when Mr. May-I’s dead grandfather came up. His name was Grandpa Clyde. And what I learned about him was this: Grandpa Clyde always said, “Life is too short not to go first class.”
I could not agree more.
I wasn’t entirely sure why my Grandma Shirley visited me that day. But all signs point to the fact that her Matchmaking Club is back in session. And the only thing I need to do to get matched is to say absolutely yes to my “oo la la’s”.
